$#!7 My IFB Pastor Says.... - GraceThruFaith - 05-02-2011 02:24 AM I'd like to start a thread for those who currently attend an IFB church, whether you enjoy or dislike it. I dislike my IFB church but only attend because I have really good friends who attend that I've grown up with. And I only attend on Sunday nights, anyway. I plan on posting on this thread every week until I leave the church (within a couple months) of the things my pastor says. My pastor used 2 Cor 11:14-15 to describe how Satan deceives us by slowly introducing a small change in our lives - dress, music, worship style, etc - that will inevitably lead to our demise. Basically, if there's any change in your life that doesn't match the teachings of IFB, it's of Satan and not of God. I started a thread about this way of thinking called "That's where it starts". He said that Satan starts with something small - it could be (pastor's example) adding soft music to the hymnals the church already sings. This small decision will progressively lead to having CCM music with no old-fashioned hymns of the faith. This change is not of God, so logically it must be of Satan. And from this, he used the rest of the sermon tonight to bash on New Evangelicals and their CCM, worship styles, and corrupt theology. My pastor has never once described what a New Evangelical is, but my assumption is anyone who has looser standards on dress, music, and worship style than my pastor and who uses those things for church growth. He talked about predestination and said it's a lazy man's theology. JESUS SAID "Whosoever will may come", AMEN? He did say "Whosoever will may come." by the way. He talked about people who want to read about amillennialism and post-tribulation and ask, "I just want to read all other opinions" my pastor dogmatically says, "If you want to read what people say, read the Bible!" It's as if my pastor thinks anything that's not Pretribulation and Pre-millennialism comes straight out of people's asses and don't use Scripture to support their view. Additionally, I hate how my pastor sugarcoats his arrogance and pride with statements like, "So often I feel so worthless and feel like I don't deserve to be a pastor to this great church" but then proceeds to say "You may think that I am a pastor who is against everything, I'm against movies, I'm against smoking, I want to make sure a man dresses like a man and a woman dresses like a woman, I want to have old-fashioned music, I want to keep the King James Version, I want to keep the choir, I want to keep the pulpit, but go ahead, buy into the corruption [of New Evangelical philosophy]." How freakin' arrogant do you have to be that you think that everything you believe is the only right way and everyone else who disagrees with you is straight-up wrong? BTDT Your description sounds so much like my former fundy pastor I am having flashbacks! He did say "Whosoever will may come." by the way. His dismissal is lazy preaching. One positive thing I got from my previous IFB pastor was this. IF you want to discredit something, do so in a loving way, by telling the truth. Instead of saying "Calvinism is from the pits of hell" as I was prone to do so, it would be much more biblical to simply preach the whosoeverwills and let the Holy Spirit teach people. The positives will recieve a better response than just screaming about how it is wrong. Fundys have been bashing the New Evangelical bogeyman for decades. Truth is, no one self-identifies as New Evangelical, and no one has for at least 35 years, with maybe a few exceptions like the late Carl F.H. Henry (I don't know if he called himself NE by the time he passed away a couple of years ago,, but it is possible). It's easier to create a category of people who don't exist (now, anyway) and bash them than it is to thoughtfully disagree. RE: Things My IFB Pastor Says.... - GraceThruFaith - 05-02-2011 01:28 PM Here's another thing: Christ is rarely ever preached in my pastor's sermons. My pastor rarely talks about Christ and His words, he never mentions how the Old Testament points to Christ, he never exalts Christ. I started observing this after Darrell posted a blog post about those who still attend a Fundy church to check if Christ is preached. RE: Things My IFB Pastor Says.... - FinallyFree - 05-02-2011 02:34 PM Works righteousness is very predominant in much of the preaching that goes on in fundyland, though it rears it's ugly head in many evangelical circles as well. Sadly Christ gets hidden behind all rules. RE: Things My IFB Pastor Says.... - captain_solo - 05-02-2011 03:09 PM Isnt this a TV show with William Shatner? I don't know if you can change the title through the edit function or not. I was just joking, anyway, though it is at least a bit true...
