  1. Fundy Rule: When you start a church you should take care not to let local music styles creep into your church. If you start a church in Appalachia the inverse of this rule shall be in force for bluegrass music is holy and Bill Monroe can sorta be claimed since he sang some gospel.

    1. Corollary: bluegrass music may have a beat and rhythm but is exempt from fundy music rules because….well, because bluegrass. 😎

  2. Yeah, these guys at least are decent pickers, and the banjo player sings competently.

That doesn’t change the essential foolishness of being offended by someone using the phrase “holiday tree.”
How does someone having a “holiday tree” stop you or me from having a “Christmas tree,” or any other kind of tree we want?

  3. “Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe.”

Time to turn on the Fundy-to-English translator.

    Here’s the translation:
“If you don’t try to force everyone else to believe what you believe, do what you do, and say what you say, you aren’t doing it right!”

  4. Of course everyone know that Jesus was not born on Christmas Day… but that messes up the chorus, and the chorus is the only thing that is original.

  5. While I agree that calling it a “holiday tree” doesn’t sound quite right, I think he’s making much ado about nothing. 🙄
But he does have a point, sort of. Everyone knows what a Christmas Tree is; “Holiday tree” makes me think of a palm tree festooned with American flags, lights, pumpkins, hearts, Easter eggs, birthday presents, kind of silly really. Has anyone else heard of this? ❓ 😕
Love the bluegrass, but surprised Disney doesn’t sue.

    1. Have I heard of a “holiday tree”?
Sure, it’s what interfaith communities have this time of year, to include people who may not be celebrating Christmas as well as those who do celebrate Christmas.
It’s also what some cities, counties, and states put up to try to decorate seasonally while avoiding the Constitutionally-prohibited establishment of religion.

A Christmas tree, on the other hand, is part of an early Modern attempt to make a pagan European winter festival seem Christian.

      1. I think I get your point about Holiday Trees, but to most people, a tree decorated with lights, colored balls, tinsel, popcorn, and stars is still going to be called a “Christmas Tree” even if it has no religious symbols on it. 😐
Loosely, it’s a synonym for “colorful” as in “all lit up like a Christmas tree.” 😎

  6. That tickled my funny bone. Can’t pick on this song; it’s hard to pick on something that’s meant to be funny!
I like Panda Rose’s mental picture of a holiday tree. I have actually seen dressed up palm trees; lived in So Cal until I was 12 then moved to Tucson area. If you have a palm tree and are so inclined, you dress it up! In the Tucson area we also have dressed up saguaro cacti, and we ourselves put lights in the big mesquite tree in our yard! 😀

  7. Actually, they call it Christmas ie Christ’s Mass you know, that narsty Catlick thing not ChristMUSS

  8. All this fuss about “Happy Holidays” v. “Christmas”! Some of my friends are Jewish, and do not celebrate Christmas. It is not as if Christmas is the only holiday at this time of year.

So often we major on the minor things and our “witness” turns out to be little more than a temper tantrum.

Well, the song was funny. And yes, he had to have watched Dumbo to make up that song!

I wish you all a Happy Christmas. My family will go to the Episcopal Church to its Christmas Eve service. I can’t think of a better way to greet Christmas Day. If you have never been to one, I encourage you to try it at least once.

  9. As early as the “Christmas Season” starts every year I believe Happy Holidays includes Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s and Labor Day. It doesn’t bother me if people want to wish me Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings.

  10. It doesn’t bother me when folks say “happy holidays” in stores and whatnot, but I have to admit when people say “Merry Christmas” I tend to want to return more to those places this time of year. Also, I would more likely buy a tree labeled “Christmas tree” than a tree labeled “Holiday tree.” I guess what I’m saying is that I can let my dollars do the talking, and not make a big deal about it vocally.

  11. I wonder how many put-Jesus-back-in-Christmas belligerent fundies will also be putting the mass back in Christ-mass.

    1. Sarah,

When God and Jesus said to “Love your neighbour” HE did not say you could pick and choose which one of your neighbours to “love”. Those “fundies” that you hate so much that you murder them with your mouth by calling them “put-Jesus-back-in-Christmas belligerent fundies” is NOT showing “love”.

      As Jesus said:

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

      Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.”
      Matthew 5: 21-24

Also Sarah, it is the Catholics that celebrate “mass”. I have been to many Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches, and never have I seen one practice “mass”. “Mass” is a Catholic practice, not an Independent Fundamental Baptist practice. There may be other denominations that celebrate “mass”, but I do not know.

      1. Sarah….
Obviously….”Not-in-the-clique” is not fluent in the language of sarcasm. And has zero sense of humor…..WOW. 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

  12. Happy Winter Solstice everyone! These guys would love to know that a Christmas tree began as a pagan ritual.

    1. Except that it really didn’t. No self-respecting tree-worshipping pagan would cut a tree down and haul it into the house. It’s ridiculous.
Home Christmas trees began being used in 16th-Century Germany. Probably they are an adaptation of the “Tree of Paradise” from the mystery plays put on during the Feast of Adam and Eve in the high Medieval.

      1. What about regular pagans, who used trees for their wood-burning fireplaces/stoves/etc.? Certainly they would like a tree in the corner of their little house to commemorate whatever it was before “them Catlicks stole it.”

  13. How can the same ones who are offended by “Holiday Tree” condemn the wicked “Baal Bush?” ❓

    1. For a minute I thought you meant the former President, and that’s a whole barrel of worms in itself. 😈

  14. I can’t help myself…I love this song. Yes, the sentiment is misguided and the words are shaky…but the music is catchy and I like the non-screamy attitude of their preaching/singing. Thanks for a musical post that doesn’t make me want to throw something at computer screen.

  15. Weird how almost everybody on here hates everything of value, tradition, and meaning. Is it just fundiness in reverse? That’s what it feels like.

I like Christmas. I am appreciative of the Judeo-Christian heritage of the US – although I do acknowledge that secularism has also played a strong role since the nation’s founding.

I do resent secularist, atheist attempts to crack down on Christmas. I found nothing distasteful in the song, but it’s funny that regardless of what is posted – so many people on here have to snark.

    1. FEEGER,

What it is, is people on this site are still hurting over what happened to them. They have a right to be hurt, BUT, what they fail to realize is that they have allowed that pain and suffering to rule their lives, to make a prisoner of them. It consumes their lives, their thoughts, every waking moment, every sleeping moment. They cannot think of anything but how they were hurt, and that is why they lash out at anything that is of God Jesus Christ Holy Spirit. When a church or its leaders fall, it brings them great joy because it gives credence to their pain and suffering. Example: “see!, it happened there too! These IFB churches are dangerous and evil!”

What they are blinded to is that they have traded God Jesus Christ Holy Spirit for a new god called anger rage and hatred, and they at the moment have given themselves over to this false god, and at the moment have no intentions of ridding themselves of it.

FEEGER, pray for us. We need all the prayers we can get.

      Thank you.
