Podcast #4: Mythbusting

(The first few seconds are done on my shiny new — and much better sounding — microphone but I was too lazy to go back and re-record the parts I had already done with the old one. Feel free to complain.)

  1. There are plenty of us “normal” ex-fundies out there. Thanks for spelling it out. {{{Darrell}}} 😎

  2. Enjoyed as always. Recording tip: move the mic away from your mouth somewhat to reduce the hissing “s” sound. If you use a headset mic, put the mic level with your eyes.

Oh, and AMEN! to the bit about the Cowboys.

    1. Yeah, I’ve tried that. With this mic a hair too close and you get all the hissing plosives. A hair too far away and you sounds like you’re yelling up a rain spout.

It’s just a terrible, terrible mic.

Future recordings should be noticeably better.

  3. Do the questions and personal attacks discourage you? I often feel crushed when people criticize me (or my husband); I think I need to get thicker skin.

I am relieved to know you’re not an atheistic communist. You did not, however, tell us if you were or were not a hippie.

    1. Since my business here is poking fun and shooting the odd sacred cow, I can’t let it get to me too much.

The way I look at it, they love me or they hate me but they still stop by to read me. So either way, I win. 😀

    2. “Atheistic communist” was said in jest, right? I’ve known quite a few and they are perfectly harmless people. 🙂

      1. On the podcast Darrell was listing things people have asked him including is he an atheist (no) or is he a communist (no). I was referencing that.

      2. I didn’t mean to insinuate they weren’t nice people! 😳

For me, personally, though, I would be uncomfortable commenting on a blog written by an unbeliever to make fun of Christians. SFL, however, is written by a believer who is pointing out some of the foibles of the separatist, fundamental way we were brought up. Although critics write in here accusing everyone here of being in rebellion against God, many of us consider ourselves sincere followers of Christ who are rejecting fundamentalist dogma because we see where it does not fit what the Bible says.

        1. Is “Ditto” as good as and “A-men?”
          Then Ditto
or as the fundie programming says, “A-men Sister”
(of course I’m not saying you are preaching… 😀 )

  4. The next obvious question is, where do you stand? You say you are an evangelical, but you point out absurdities of evangelical culture.

    1. I stand here:

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
      maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
      born of the Virgin Mary,
      suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, dead, and buried;
      the third day he rose from the dead;
      he ascended into heaven,
      and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy catholic church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.

and to your second point, fundamentalist<>evangelical.

      1. I thought I knew everything, but I didn’t know FE. Perhaps this explanation should be in your about page, and maybe F and E should be in the glossary page.

        1. I do too, I just picked the “wrong” version to copy and paste.

It’s not as if I have it memorized or anything 😉

      2. Hey, that’s the same thing I quote at my worship services every week! You’d fit in at my church!

Seriously, that’s all our church really requires for “fellowship.” After seven years of quoting creeds I had hoped never to quote another one again, but I like quoting this one because it’s so universal. 😀

  5. That didn’t sound like a black Scofield. More like a pink NIV. Or the Satanic Bible for homosexual Nazis.

The part about working for BJU to root out staff/students made me laugh. 🙄

    Love the podcasts.

  6. You say you are just a “random” guy on the internet… but are you frustrated and blogging from your basement?
Inquiring minds want to know…. or as least Ergun Cantor hopes you are doing this from your basement. And since there seems to be some frustration with your microphone then, if you are blogging from your basement or at least your downstairs area then he will be able to claim he was right on that one. (at least) 🙂

      1. Maybe you could poll your readership and see how many are frustrated and blog from their basements. Then you could submit your results to the Liberty web site as proof for or against “frustrated basement blogging.” 🙂

    1. I’ve always pictured darrell blogging with a pirates eye patch, a parrott, and a long blade knife clinched in his teeth, possibly stabbing the keystrokes out with other knives.

        1. Patch would never have a long blade clutched between his teeth… it might ruin his enamel or cut his tongue.

  7. Let me say that most, if not all of the absurdities pointed out here are accretions on the face of Evangelicalism, and not even of the Bene Esse, let alone the Esse of it (Latin, please feel free to look up). I am an Evangelical pastor in the UK, and a convert from liberal Anglicanism, and I find this site very amusing. I also think it’s a good thing to be able to laugh at ourselves!

One point, though – it’s a myth that the KJV put the Bible into the language of the common people of the 1600s. It put it into the language of learned scholars of the mid-16th century!

    1. “it’s a myth that the KJV put the Bible into the language of the common people of the 1600s.”

I’m aware of that. However, the Fundy Rules are written in the voice of a fundamentalist so I occasionally include bits of their mythology as if they were fact.

      1. It was the common language in the sense that it was English, not Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, or Latin.
But the kind of English it was was that of scholars and poets, not of cowherds and shipwrights.

    2. Are you Pastor Gervase Nicholas Edward Charmley that frequently is mentioned by Chris Rosebrough, Bryan Wolfmueller and Evan Goeglein?

  8. This is too great. Love your site. I’m with you, I am losing money also with my blog but people are encouraged to click ad spots! 🙂

And yes, the Dallas Cowboys are evil.

    1. Sure. Some people have a bad habit of assuming that if I allow someone to post an opinion or a personal experience in the comments that I myself must be the same or agree 100%.

That may be the way fundies run their blogs but it’s not exactly true here.

  9. Well done Darrel.

I love watching people try to figure me out before knowing who I am and what I do.
I am pretty sure you are having some fun too.

  10. HAHA! Your a freak! I was busting a gut listening to you. I must say that my respect o meter went down a notch when I discovered you like Lawrence Welk…by doing so I have cemented my belief that you are an undercover agent, planted here to oust those who have defected to the “bitter other side”. (My blog is microscopic in size compared to you and I get regular ” Your bitter and living the defeated victim life” I am surprised you didn’t address the B(bitter) word in the podcast, maybe people don’t asssume such things because of the nice 50’s pictures you add alongside your posts?)

  11. I’m glad I didn’t have a mouthful of water when I heard the closing line of the podcast…because I would have fried my monitor.

If you would have said you liked the Cowboys then I would have suspected you of being a gay atheist communist! LOL. 😀

  12. Well played. Actually you sound a lot like me (Non-calvinist but wouldn’t know it by the book collection, not a big fan of CCM, study bible).

That leads me to a question that has nothing to do with what I just said:

Other than the fact that the IFB’s will run out of messages to preach on tithing before you’ll ever run out of material from their absurdities, why did you start the blog?

  13. A gay communist atheist would actually not be very well-placed to write this kind of blog, because he or she would not know enough about the culture and habits of Fundies. (I actually know a few GCAs, but that’s another story.)

For various reasons, many people assume that I am:
    An atheist
    A communist
    Gay
    A drug user
    A foreigner
    Bitter
    A bleeding-heart liberal
    A lawyer
    A seminary graduate
    A Catholic
    A hippie

The truth is that I am not any of these things. The people who think I’m not from the U.S. puzzle me the most. Hearing a sentence or two in my Texas accent should have given them a clue about where I’m from.

    1. “A gay communist atheist would actually not be very well-placed to write this kind of blog”

Actually a GCA could write a blog like this if said GCA was an ex-fundie that spend enough time in the fundy bunker.

BTW Big Gary, I love your list. I think I have heard a sermon about every one of those where the message was either:
      1) I used to be a (fill in the blank)
      2) I just saved someone who was a (fill in the blank)
      3) If you’re a (fill in the blank) we don’t want you here.

  14. Darrell, why doesn’t Fundy rule #53 apply to the Schofield Reference Bible? All of “Doctor” Schofield’s notes telling the reader which verses correspond with each other. It’s like “Doctor” Schofield wrote the 67th book of the Bible, “The Book of Cyrus” and added it to the Bible.
And why is it okay for a man like “Doctor” Schofield, to lie on his resume, put the lie in his reference bible and become a hero to millions of Fundies, and even get to start his own bible college?

    1. I own a Scofield because I got one back when I was still a fundamentalist. The reference was tongue in cheek.

I still own the Bible but I can’t remember ever having used the footnotes.

      1. Darrell. My comment was tongue in cheek too. It is interesting that fundies have no problem with reference bibles (KJVO), yet rail against anyone who would add or subtract from the bible. Printings one’s footnotes in the bible (and implying those footnotes are 100% perfect)it would seem like something fundies would oppose.

        1. A favorite past time of mine was to check what the preacher was saying a certain verse meant to what my Scofield notes said it meant. Needless to say they didn’t always matchup 😯

    2. It’s okay because Scofield got away with it!!! Interestingly the latest study of Scofield says that he was a con artist before his conversion… actually the author then goes on to imply he was sill one afterwards…

  15. That was awesome!!! I wish people would realize the same thing- that just because I’m no longer ‘fundy’ doesn’t mean became a devil-worshipper.

Definitely bonus points for being a civilian contractor. I like having paved roads and electricity.

  16. Hey now, don’t be knocking Scofield! His linked cross-references are actually pretty handy… even if I disagree with quite a bit of what he says. But then, if you agree with everything a preacher/missionary/pastor/priest/theologian says, no matter how much you trust and respect them, you’re doing a personal relationship with God wrong. 😀
