Right on, Sandra. As Jesus quoted Isaiah 29:13 (KJV isn't my favorite but just so we're all on the same page): Foreasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips so honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.

Lance & Michael, Both of you hit the bullseye with "contending for the BAPTIST faith". Your faith is founded on Baptist tradition (traditions of men) but NOT on the Word of God. If only you woud read the Word of God with a true heart that longs for the Truth of Scripture instead of twisitng it to fit your Baptist faith. Are you a Baptist or a child of God? Is your Baptist faith what you put your faith in trust in or is it God?

Many of us were just like you. Full of Baptist traditions. It wasn't until we tested the spirits and saw that most of what is taught in IFB churches are nothing but traditions of men. I encourage you to read Matt. 23. You will get a clear picture of what IFB churches that I personally attended are all about. Of course, you will find pharisees, & traditions that replace the Truth of God's Word in all denominations not just in the IFB churches. For many of us, our experience comes from the IFB thus this web page.

Matt. 5:20...For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Amen Lance, praise God there are still folks that ARE contending for the faith, doctorine and goodly heritage of the baptist poeple. Interesting how you're one of the only one that used scripture to solidify your position. That right there is a true baptist distinctive and what will keep our churches and people seperate unto God. I espouse the same beliefs and the church i'm joined to uses the baptist flag and the same pledge. Sadly many, even in our circles, don't understand the biblical docterines that are tied to this position and how they hold reformed catholic theology and NOT historic, biblical and uniquely baptist doctorines.

Lance,

Baptists are Protestants. Unless you hold to Landmarkism -- in which case <a href="http://www.stufffundieslike.com/2009/02/the-trail-of-blood/" rel="nofollow">this post</a> is for you.

People who do not understand the reason for the Baptist flag do not understand the definitive doctrine for which the Baptist faith stands. Baptist have been persecuted from the time of the early church till now by Catholics and Protestants alike, right up to our very own shores here in America. Someone quoted above 2 Cor 6:17, where we must be separate from them. There are many Baptist churches today that are more Protestant in ideology than Baptistic. There is another pledge written to this flag also, that goes like this:

"I pledge allegiance to the Baptist Flag, and to the Doctrine for which it stands. One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. Contending for the faith until Christ returns."

The Baptist Doctrine has been under attack since the time Christ started His church, for it is this doctrine which He used to start His church. The true Baptist are the only group who's beginnings can not be traced to an earthly founder, hence, the need for doctrinal separation and purity. When a Baptist church ceases to hold to the doctrines of Christ and the Apostles, they cease to be a Baptist church, thus further reiterating the reason for the Baptist Flag, as a sign of holding to that doctrin which Christ gave His church when He started it.

I used be part of an IFB church that espoused Landmarkism.

I was very angry when I saw them re-baptizing a missionary who was previously baptized by a parachurch SBC-minister. If the missionary was genuinely saved and baptized the 1st time, then what the IFB church had done is to clearly insult what Christ had given to us (baptism).
